1. 1

Mithras is the name of a god of light, or of the sun, in an ancient Persian religion that the Roman world later as Mithraism. In the first and second centuries AD that religion spread through the Roman Empire and mattered especially among Roman soldiers. In art he is often shown in a cave-like place, killing a bull — that scene is how most people recognise him. He is a historical god-name, not a figure in living everyday religion for most people now, and not a character from the Christian Bible. The English name is a learned borrowing from Latin Mithras. Dictionaries treat it as a of Mitra (the older Iranian god-name), Mehr (a later Iranian form), and — a long way down the road — mitre, the bishop’s hat. Same distant name, very different lives; do not mix the god up with the hat.
