A misstep is a mistake, especially one you make because you did not read the situation: the wrong remark at dinner, a plan pushed too soon, a public person who “made a misstep” and had to apologise. The picture underneath is a wrong step with the foot — you slip, you put your foot in a hole. That physical sense is still alive (a misstep on the ), but news and workplaces mostly mean a social or political slip. It feels a little more serious than a tiny slip of the tongue, and a little softer than calling someone a fool. As a verb, to misstep is to make that kind of move.
