    A misquotation is a quote that is not quite what the person said — a word is wrong, a bit is left out, or something is added. This is the noun. Journalists, teachers, and people in court care about it, because a wrong quote can change the meaning. It is more formal than the everyday verb misquote. Though actually, people also cry misquotation when the words are right but the setting is cut away, so the line sounds harsher or kinder than it was. That stretches the tidy meaning, but it is how the fight often goes. An honest mistype and a careful twist can both produce a misquotation; the word itself does not tell you which.
