Misleadingly describes the way something is done, said, or made when the effect is to give people a false picture. The key idea is indirect: a misleading thing does not have to contain a lie. Every single word can be true, and the impression the listener walks away with is still wrong — because something important was left out, or made to look bigger or smaller than it is, or placed where it suggests the wrong connection. Because it is an adverb, it attaches to a verb or an adjective. Two patterns cover most of what you will see. It sits before a past participle: misleadingly labelled, misleadingly named, misleadingly worded, misleadingly presented, misleadingly titled. And it sits before an adjective: misleadingly simple (looks easy, is not), misleadingly small, misleadingly calm. That second pattern is worth a moment, because it is not really about anyone lying. "The exam was misleadingly easy at the start" — nobody deceived you; the exam just gave a false first impression. "His voice was misleadingly gentle." English uses the adverb there simply to mean the appearance and the reality do not match. Where you meet it: consumer news, advertising rules, science writing, product packaging, reports. It is a formal-ish word and it carries a mild accusation, so writers reach for it when they want to criticise something's presentation without going as far as calling it a lie — which is exactly why it is so common in careful journalism and in legal language, where saying "falsely" would be a much stronger and riskier claim.
