In games with a ball — tennis, cricket, golf, baseball — to mishit is to hit the ball, but badly. You did make contact, so it is not a complete miss. The bat, , or club just did not meet the ball in the clean place. The ball may dribble off the edge, pop up , or fly off to the side. Players and commentators use this word; it is sports talk, not kitchen talk. You can use it as a verb (she mishit the serve) or as a noun (a mishit into the net). Though actually, outside sport it is rare. If you drop a cup, you would not say you mishit it.
