To misdiagnose is to say what is wrong — and get it wrong. The first home of the word is medicine: a doctor looks at the signs and names the illness, but the name is not the real one, so the treatment may not help. People now use it more widely: a mechanic can misdiagnose a car, a teacher can misdiagnose why a child is quiet, a company can misdiagnose why sales are down. The idea is the same: you give an explanation of the problem, and that explanation is incorrect. It is a verb you do to the illness or the problem (they misdiagnosed the cancer; they misdiagnosed the fault), though in everyday talk people also say they misdiagnosed the patient. Formal in medical writing; ordinary in news and talk when something important was named .
