It sits close to misunderstanding, though actually misconstruction often sounds as if the meaning was built wrongly, like a sentence put together on the wrong plan. In older grammar books it can also mean a sentence whose parts are joined wrongly, but the sense here is the mistaken understanding, not a brick wall put up badly. Most students will meet the verb misconstrue far more often than this noun. If someone says “open to misconstruction,” they mean the words could honestly be read more than one way — so the fault may be in the wording, not only in the listener.
