Misconduct is bad or dishonest behaviour by someone who was trusted to behave well — a teacher, a doctor, a police officer, a company boss, a sports player. It is a formal, often legal word. You hear it in the news: professional misconduct, academic misconduct (cheating or copying in school), gross misconduct (so serious the person can lose the job). It is not the word for a child being naughty, and it is heavier than bad manners. The person had a role, and they broke the rules of that role. There is a verb, to misconduct yourself, but it sounds old; today the noun does almost all the work. In sport, misconduct can also mean a serious break of the game’s rules. Though actually, newspapers sometimes use it as a polite blanket for several different wrongs — money, cruelty, or sex — so the headline is tidier than the facts.
