A minuet is a slow, dance from the 1600s and 1700s, with small, neat steps. The name comes from French for something small, which fits those tiny, careful movements. It is also the music for that dance, often in three-beat time; you hear minuets in court and drawing-room scenes, and as a movement inside longer pieces by composers such as Bach, Haydn, and Mozart. You can, in old-fashioned English, say that people minuet, meaning they dance it, but that verb is rare now. The word belongs to history, costume drama, and classical music. It is not a minute on the clock, and it is not minute meaning tiny, though those words sit close in the family tree. In easy talk nobody uses minuet for an ordinary slow dance at a party.
組成From French menuet, from menu (small) + -et (a little one), from Latin minutus (very small). Named for the dance's small steps. The old verb, to dance a minuet, comes from the same French word.
