A minivan is a tall, box-shaped family car with sliding side doors and seats for about six to eight people. In American English this is the ordinary word; British speakers more often say people carrier or . The name became widely used in the 1980s, when this kind of car grew popular as a roomier choice than a station wagon (the long family car with a big boot). Though actually, a minivan is still a passenger car, not a delivery van: people sit in it. Parents like it for school runs and holidays because the seats fold and there is space for bags. It is not an SUV (the higher, jeep-like family car).

組成From mini- (“smaller than the usual kind”) + van (a box-shaped vehicle for carrying people or goods). Used earlier in technical writing as mini-van; the one-word form spread with the 1980s family cars.
