Mining is the work, and the industry, of getting coal, gold, iron, and other useful stuff out of the earth. People dig tunnels, cut into hills, or the surface; whole towns can live off that work for a hundred years, and feel empty when the mine closes. The word is ordinary and factual — you meet it in news, geography, and history. A mine is the place in the ground; mining is the digging and the business around it. Though actually English later borrowed the same picture for “digging out” other things, like information or computer coins. Those are real uses you will hear, but this sense is the old earth work: rock, dust, helmets, and what comes up from below.
