1. 1

A miner is a person who works in a mine, usually under the ground, to take out coal, gold, copper, or other rock that people want. The work is heavy and can be dangerous: dust, dark, and falling stone. In towns that grew around coal or gold, “the miners” means that whole group of workers. In everyday English this is almost always the meaning. Though actually, there is also a bird, the myna, which some people spell miner; that is a different word that only looks the same. If you see miner next to coal, gold, or a helmet with a lamp, it is the worker.
