Minging is British informal slang meaning very bad, unpleasant, or ugly. Food can be minging if it tastes awful; a bathroom can be minging if it is dirty; weather can be minging if it is wet and grey. Calling a person minging — saying they look ugly — is rude. It comes from mingin, “stinking,” the “-ing” form of ming, “to stink.” That verb goes back to Middle English mengen, “to mix,” and Old English mengan, with the same “mix” idea; the smell meaning grew later, and then people stretched it to anything they strongly dislike. Young people in Britain use it a lot; Americans generally do not. It is not a polite word, and you would not put it in a school essay. Though actually, the oldest picture is a bad smell; “ugly” is a later stretch.
