    Mineralogy is the scientific study of minerals — those natural solid materials in the Earth, like quartz or pyrite. People in this field study what minerals are made of, how they grow, how they break, and how we sort and name them. It sits beside geology: geology is the bigger story of rocks and the Earth; mineralogy looks more closely at the mineral ingredients. It is university and museum language. You do not need this word to buy salt or gold; you need it when the talk turns to how those things are built, crystal by crystal.
