A millipede is a long, thin little creature with a hard body made of many rings and a great many legs — two pairs on most rings. It walks slowly in damp soil or under a log. It is not an insect. The name looks like “thousand feet,” but that is a picture-name, not a real count: nobody has a thousand. Though actually, people mix millipedes up with centipedes all the time. A centipede is usually flatter and faster, with one pair of legs on each ring, and some can bite; a millipede is rounder and often curls up when you touch it.
