1. 1

A milligram is a tiny unit of weight. There are 1,000 milligrams in one gram. Doctors, chemists, and food labels use it for things too light to feel in your hand: the medicine in a tablet, the caffeine in a drink, the salt on a packet. It is written mg. Milli- always means one thousandth here. It is everyday science English, not slang. It measures weight (how heavy), not volume (how much space). The French form milligramme is where English got the word; English dropped the extra -me in the usual spelling.
