A miler is a person, or sometimes a horse, who over one mile. On the track, the mile is a famous distance — a little more than 1,600 metres — and a miler is the specialist who trains for that race. People say a four-minute miler for someone fast enough to run a mile in four minutes, a famous time in sport. The word is informal sports English: you hear it at the track or in the newspaper, not in a science book. It does not mean anyone who can walk a mile; it means a racer for that distance. Though actually, newspapers still love the mile even in countries that run 1,500 metres at the Olympics, so miler has stayed in English.
