Mid-range products and services sit in the middle of a price list: not the cheapest, not the most expensive. A mid-range phone is the one most people can live with, at a middle price. Shops and like the word because it sounds practical — not poor, not show-off. Though actually, it does not always mean “so-so quality.” It means the middle of that maker’s or that market’s range, so a mid-range luxury car can still cost a lot. People also use mid-range about sound, for the tones between bass and treble; that is a different job for the same spelling. Here we mean the price-and-product use. You will see mid-range, midrange, and mid range; the is common in careful writing.
