Microsurgery is an operation in which a doctor repairs or takes out a very small part of the body, using tiny tools, and often a microscope or a laser. The work is so fine that the doctor cannot do it by ordinary alone — think of a thin blood vessel or putting a finger back on. Hospitals use it for nerves, tiny vessels, eyes, and other delicate places. Though actually, not every operation that uses a laser is microsurgery. The laser is only one possible tool. What makes it microsurgery is the small scale and the careful, close-up work. It is a hospital word, quite formal, not something you hear at the dinner table.

組成micro- (“small”) + surgery. Surgery goes back to Ancient Greek χειρουργός (kheirourgós): χείρ (kheír) “hand” + ἔργον (érgon) “work” — work done with the hands.
