A microsecond is a tiny slice of time: one millionth of a second. A million of them fit into one ordinary second. Scientists, engineers, and computers need this word because their work is so fast that a second is much too big a box. You cannot see anything that happens in a microsecond — your blink is thousands of times longer. Though actually, in ordinary talk people almost never use it. When someone wants to say “very, very quick,” they are more likely to say millisecond, which is a thousandth of a second, still huge next to a microsecond. The short written form is µs. Micro- here is the “very small” piece, and second is the time unit you already know.
