To micromanage someone is to run their work by watching and deciding every little step — what they do, how they do it, and often when they do it — in a way that feels and shows you do not trust them. A boss who micromanages may every email, stand over your shoulder, and ask for updates every hour. The speaker is almost always complaining; it is not a compliment. Though actually, checking a beginner on a dangerous job is not quite the same thing: the sting in this word is the extra control that is not needed. It is workplace English, quite strong, and a little informal in tone even though offices use it all the time. It does not mean managing a tiny company (that would be a micro-business). The 'micro' is about tiny details of someone else's work.
