To design or build structures and machines that are extremely small — parts and devices you may need a strong close-up lens to see clearly, far smaller than a watch. The word names that activity, and you also use it as a verb: engineers microengineer a sensor when they shape it, on purpose, at that tiny size. People sometimes call the person a microengineer too, the same way engineer is both a job and a verb. Nearby you may meet microengineering as the usual name of the field. It is a technical word; you will not hear it at the dinner table. It has nothing to do with a boss who watches every little thing you do — that is micromanage, a completely different idea that only shares the micro- “small” piece.
