A microcomputer is a small computer. That sounds almost too simple, and in a way it is. The word grew up when many computers still filled rooms; a microcomputer was the new kind that could sit on a desk or in a home. First uses go back to around 1956, and in the 1970s and 1980s it was an , modern word. Today almost every computer you meet is small in that old sense, so people just say computer, PC, or laptop. You will still see microcomputer in older books and in some technical writing. It is not the word for the tiny chip inside a machine — that is closer to microprocessor — and it is not a cute name for a phone. Though actually, your phone is, in the old meaning, a very powerful microcomputer; we just stopped using the word.
