1. 1

Michaelmas is a Christian holy day on 29 September. It honours Saint Michael, the angel in Bible stories who leads the good angels. The name is really “Michael’s Mass” — Mass is an old word for a church service — so it is Michael’s church day, built like Christmas. In Britain, though actually, it has long been more than a church date. It was one of the old days, when people paid rent, hired workers, or began a new term. Oxford and Cambridge still call the autumn term Michaelmas term. You may also hear of Michaelmas daisies, flowers that bloom around then. Taiwan does not keep this as a holiday; students mostly meet the word in British books, history, or university names. It is a quiet, old-fashioned word, not a word for chat.
