1. 1

A mezzotint is a kind of printed picture. The artist works on a metal plate, making it rough, then polishes some parts smooth. Ink stays in the rough parts (dark) and wipes off the smooth parts (light), so you get soft light and shade, almost like a painting. The word is also used for a picture made this way, and as a verb: to mezzotint a plate. It is an art-studio and art-history word, not everyday English. Though actually, it is not a photograph and not “a medium tint” in the ordinary sense of tint — it is a print from that special plate.

組成Borrowed from Italian mezzatinta, literally “half dye” or “half tint”: mezza “half” + tinta “dye, tint.” The name points to the in-between greys, not only black and white.
