When a cat mews, it makes a small, high crying sound — the kind of cry a cat uses when it wants food, wants to come in, or is simply talking to you. It is a soft sound, not a big angry cry. You can use it as a verb (the kitten mewed at the door) or as a noun (a sad little mew). People also write this sound as or ; mew feels a little older and a little quieter. Though actually, writers sometimes stretch it to other small high cries, like a baby, but its real home is cats.
