A metamaterial is a material people design and build, not one you simply dig up. Scientists give it a repeating inner pattern so that light, sound, or radio do things ordinary stuff cannot do — bending the 'wrong' way, slipping around an object, or stopping short. News stories love the phrase invisibility cloak; the lab versions are real but still narrow and , not magic coats. The meta- here is not the internet meta of 'a joke about a joke' or 'about itself'. It is closer to 'beyond': beyond what wood, glass, or metal manage on their own. You will meet this in science writing and engineering talk, almost never at dinner. It is a technical, slightly word.

- Planar metamaterials with subwavelength thickness, or metasurfaces, consisting of single-layer or few-layer stacks of planar structures, can be readily fabricated using lithography and nanoprinting methods, and the ultrathin thickness in the wave propagation direction can greatly suppress the undesirable losses.
