    A metalanguage is language used to talk about language. When a teacher says “this word is a noun” or “this sentence is in the past,” those labels are metalanguage. Dictionaries and grammar books are full of it. Though actually, you already use a little of it without the fancy name: asking “What does that word mean?” is using language to talk about language. In logic and computer science, metalanguage can also mean a language that describes another language — for example, English used to explain a programming language. It is a specialist word (, philosophy, teacher training). Ordinary people just say “grammar words” or “words about words.” It has nothing to do with metals.
