A mesa is a hill with a flat top and steep sides, like a table of rock standing up from the land. You meet the word most in the southwestern United States — dry, open country in places such as Arizona and New Mexico — and in writing about that landscape. It is a geography word, not everyday British English. Though actually, people sometimes stretch it to any flat-topped hill, but the classic picture is that table shape in the American Southwest, not a mountain with a sharp peak.

組成First used in English in 1759, from Spanish mesa, table, from Latin mēnsa. It is a doublet of mensa — the two English words come from the same Latin source.
