Mensa is an international club for people who score very high on a special test of how clever they are. You take a test they accept; if you are among the top two percent in your country, you can join. It is a name, usually written Mensa, with a capital M. The name comes from a Latin word for a table. The club likes the picture of a round table: once you are in, your job, your money, and where you come from are not supposed to matter — only that score. In real life it is just a club, with local groups and a magazine. Some people say the name with respect; some say it as a joke about showing off. It is not a school, and it is not a word for “smart.” You do not call a clever friend “a mensa.” Though actually, star maps also use Mensa for a small group of stars in the far south, named after Table Mountain. That is the same Latin table-word, but it is not this club.
