A merchantman is a ship used for carrying goods, not for fighting — a trading ship. You will meet it in history, sea stories, and older news about convoys. Today people usually say cargo ship, freighter, or merchant ship. Though actually, the -man on the end does not mean a male person. In old ship names, -man often named the vessel itself (as in East Indiaman). A merchantman is the ship. The sailor is a merchant seaman, and the trader on land is a merchant. The word feels old and a little literary now.
