A man-of-war is an old navy ship built to fight, with many guns along the sides. You find the word in history and sea stories, not on today’s navy lists — now we say . The name is older than the ship: in Late Middle English a man of war was a fighting man, a soldier. People later used it for the ship, and it has been suggested that this was because such ships were filled with men-of-war in that first sense. The plural is men-of-war. Though actually, Portuguese man-of-war is not a ship at all; it is a sea animal that stings. Same words, different thing.

組成From Late Middle English man of wer, man of werre (“fighting man, soldier”). The ship sense may come from those vessels being manned by men-of-war (soldiers).
