In a science class, the meniscus is the little curve on the top of a liquid in a thin tube, made by surface tension. Water climbs the glass a bit and makes a dip in the middle (like a shallow bowl); mercury does the opposite and makes a little hill. When you read how much water is in a measuring tube, you read the bottom of that curve, with your eye level with the liquid — not the top of the glass wall. Though actually, everyday English uses the same word much more often for a crescent-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee; footballers 'tear a meniscus'. Both uses come from the idea of a little crescent, like a young moon. This entry is the liquid one, but you will meet the knee one, and it is not a different spelling.
組成From Ancient Greek μηνίσκος (mēnískos, 'crescent'), from μήνη (mḗnē, 'moon'). The ending is a little 'moon-shaped thing'. Piecewise doublet of moonish.
