Here melting does not mean ice turning to water. If someone gives you a melting look, or speaks in a melting voice, the eyes or the sound are so soft that you feel pity or love. The person seems to melt your hardness — you want to be kind, or you fall a little in love. Writers like this use for a gentle, almost liquid softness in the face or the voice. It is a slightly old-fashioned, story-book compliment. In everyday talk a student is far more likely to hear melting about chocolate or ice; this “melting look” sense lives mainly in novels, songs, and careful description. Though actually, food writing still loves melting too (“meltingly tender”), but that is a different stretch: softness you can eat, not softness that moves the heart.
