A megastar is a singer or actor so famous that huge numbers of people know the name — more than an ordinary star. Magazines, TV, and fan talk like the word because it sounds big and shiny; it is not an official title, and nobody gives you a certificate. You would not use it for a popular teacher at school. It sits in informal-to-neutral show-business English, a little breathless. People stretch it to sports, cooking, or anyone whose fame feels enormous. Older speakers are happy with star; megastar turns the volume up, the same way ads stick mega- on products to make them sound huge.
