A meeting-house is a building where pray together. are a Christian group who like worship to stay simple. They often sit in silence, and anyone may speak if they feel they should. They do not usually call this building a church, and you will not often find an altar, statues, or a priest standing at the front. The room is for meeting — with God and with one another.
The word feels a little old, and it is tied to that group. Though actually, in older American English, especially in New England, a meeting-house could also be the town's main public building, used for worship and for town meetings. The first meaning to learn is the one.
