Med is a short, informal way of saying medical. You hear it in med school (medical school), med student, pre-med (the studies before medical school), and med center. American campus English uses it a lot; it sounds casual, like something students say, not like a word on a hospital form. People stick it to a small set of nouns — med school, med student — rather than in front of every medical thing. You would still say a medical problem, not usually “a med problem.” Though actually, English also medicine to meds: “Did you take your meds?” Those are pills. Same three letters, different job.
