- 1a/ˌmedɪtəˈreɪniən/of the Mediterranean
Belonging to the Mediterranean Sea or to the lands around it, or having the things that area is known for — hot dry summers, mild wet winters, and cooking built on olive oil, bread, fish and vegetables.
Example
Taiwan's summers are wet, so we do not have a Mediterranean climate.
The word works in two directions. Pointed at a place, it says where: a Mediterranean island, a Mediterranean port, the Mediterranean coast. Pointed at weather, food or a style, it says like there: a Mediterranean climate, a Mediterranean diet, a Mediterranean look. That second use is the one to watch, because it can sit on places far from the sea — parts of California and central Chile have a Mediterranean climate, and nothing there touches that water. So when you meet it, ask whether the speaker is naming a location or describing a resemblance.

- 2n/ˌmedɪtəˈreɪniən/the lands around the sea
The land around the Mediterranean Sea, taken as one region. It usually means the southern European countries, and in wider use it takes in the North African and western Asian coasts as well. It is normally used with 'the'.
Here the word has stepped off the water and onto the shore. 'Travel around the Mediterranean' is about towns, islands and roads, not about swimming. How much land it covers depends on who is speaking: in British usage it is centred on southern Europe, while in a wider usage it stretches to North Africa and West Asia too, so let the sentence tell you how wide the speaker means. The clue is usually the verb or the preposition. 'In the Mediterranean' with people, food or work in it is the region; 'into the Mediterranean' with a river or a boat is the water.
