1. 1

Meccano is a building toy. In the box you get metal (or later, plastic) strips, plates, wheels, and gears, and you join them with tiny nuts and bolts to make cranes, cars, bridges, and machines that can really move. It has been a famous children’s toy in the UK for generations; there often remember a tin of parts. Though actually, it started under another name, “Mechanics Made Easy”: the point was to let children feel how real machines fit together, not only to pretend. In the US a very similar toy is called an Erector set. Meccano is a brand, so it takes a capital M. Beside Lego it feels old-school. Lego bricks click; Meccano uses screws, so the models take longer and sit closer to real engineering.
