A meatball is what it looks like: a small round ball of meat. You chop or mince the meat, mix in a little egg, , salt and herbs, roll it in your hands, and cook it, often in a sauce. Spaghetti and meatballs is the picture many English speakers have, from Italian cooking that took on its own life in American kitchens — though actually Italy has many kinds, not one official ball. In an English-speaking kitchen, meatball is the everyday word. Though actually, in Taiwan 肉圓 will make people think of the wobbly street-food dumpling from Changhua, wrapped in starch, which is not this. The Western thing is 肉丸 or 肉丸子. And in informal American English, calling a person a meatball can mean they are or a bit foolish — a second use.
