A meadowlark is a bird of open grassland in North America. It is about the size of a blackbird. The back is brown and streaked, so the bird can sit in dry grass and almost vanish; the breast is a clear, bright yellow, often with a black V on it. You typically see it on a fence post at the edge of a field, singing a flute-like song. Farmers and country people in the United States and Canada know it well; it is not a bird you meet in Taiwan, so you will mainly meet the English name in stories, songs, and nature films. The name is simply meadow + lark, because it lives in meadows and sings like a lark. Though actually, it is not a true lark. True larks belong to another family; the meadowlark sits with blackbirds and orioles. There is more than one kind (eastern and western), but in ordinary English meadowlark is enough.
