A meadow is a field of grass, often with wild flowers, not a field of rice, wheat, or vegetables. Cows or sheep may eat there, or people may walk through in summer. The word feels softer and prettier than field: a field can be for any farming, but a meadow makes you think of long grass, bees, and a quiet place outside town. It is an ordinary countryside word, a little gentle, more at home in stories and in talk about nature than on a city street. You would not call a football pitch a meadow, and you would not call a thick forest one either. Though actually, some “meadows” in parks are cut on purpose to look wild; the old idea is simply land, often cut for hay.
組成From Middle English medowe / medewe, from Old English mǣdwe, an inflected form of mǣd (a grassy place). That old word is tied to mowing — cutting grass. The same root sits behind an older English word mead meaning meadow, and behind mow.
