Mawkishness is the noun: the quality of being mawkish. It is the too-thick feeling itself — the mawkishness of a speech, the mawkishness of a film ending — not a person, and not one single act. Critics use it when they want to name the problem rather than just call a scene mawkish. Like the adjective, it is rather literary. Though actually, this is only mawkish with -ness stuck on, the usual English way of turning a describing word into a "the quality of…" noun. The old story still sits underneath: the sweetness has gone off.
