Though actually, the "sick" part is old and real. The word is mawk — an old word for a maggot — plus -ish, "like that." So it first meant maggoty, then nauseating, and only later "so sweet and emotional that you want to look away." That is why mawkish is harsher than sentimental. Sentimental can be gentle. Mawkish says the sweetness has gone off. It is a rather bookish, slightly old-fashioned critic's word. You will meet it in reviews more than in everyday chat. In speech, people are more likely to say too much, over the top, or just cringey.
