Mauritania is a country in northwest Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital is Nouakchott. A huge part of the land is desert, so much of the country is very dry and few people live in the north; most live further south, where there is more rain. Arabic is the official language, and the country sits on a line between North Africa and West Africa — that mix is part of how people there talk about themselves. Though actually, English speakers mix this name up all the time with Mauritius, which is a small island far away in the Indian Ocean. They look a little alike on the page, but they are not neighbours and they are not the same place. An older Roman name, Mauretania, pointed at land that is now mostly Morocco and Algeria; today’s Mauritania is next door, not the same country.
