In the Christian church, especially older Catholic, , and monastic practice, matins are the first prayers of the day, said very early, often still in the dark. The name sits with morning. In some churches the service has moved or merged with other hours, so you may meet the word more in history, in music (settings of matins), or in monasteries than in an ordinary Sunday parish. It is a church word, not everyday street English. The form is plural: we say matins for the service, not “a matin.” Some British church writing spells it mattins.
