A showing of a play, opera, or film in the afternoon, not in the evening. Theatres put on matinées so people who do not want a late night — families, older people, tourists — can still go. In English the French accent is often dropped in casual writing (matinee); both are understood. The word is ordinary in theatre and cinema talk. Though actually the French word is built on “morning,” English settled it on the afternoon show. If someone says “morning matinee,” they are mixing the French feeling with the English use; the English thing happens after lunch.
