A materialistic person cares most about money, things you can buy, and how rich a life looks from the outside. Art, faith, kindness, ideas — those get treated as less real, or as extras. The word is almost always a criticism: you are saying their values are thin. It can describe a person, a family, a city, or a whole time (“a materialistic age”). It is a fairly formal, essay-ready word, but people use it in ordinary talk too when they are judging. Though actually it does not just mean “likes nice things.” Lots of people like a warm coat and a nice meal. Materialistic is when those things have crowded out the rest, or when someone measures a life only by what it owns.
