A matchbox is a small box for holding matches, usually wooden ones, with a striking side on the box. That is the plain, older meaning, and the one this entry is for. Though actually, Matchbox is also a famous brand of tiny metal toy cars (now owned by Mattel), so named because the toys were small enough to fit in a matchbox. English speakers now use matchbox for those little cars in general, and they stretch it as a picture-word too: a matchbox house or matchbox flat is a home so small it feels like a toy. Context usually makes clear which one you mean.
火柴盒;也可指火柴盒小汽車(Matchbox 品牌,因車子小到能放進火柴盒而得名)
組成From match + box. The toy-car sense comes from the Matchbox brand (Mattel), named because the toys were sized to fit in matchboxes; the brand name then became an everyday word for those little cars.
