A matchbook is a tiny folded packet of paper matches, with a rough strip on the cover for striking. You tear one match out and strike it there. Paper matches came in the 1880s; the folded “book” with the strike-on-cover idea belongs to the 1890s. Hotels, bars, and cigarette companies used to print their names on them, and some people collected the covers. The word still names that little packet, though actually it can feel a bit old now — lighters and smoking rules have made matchbooks less common. A book folds; a is a small case, usually for wooden matches.
